Local Assistance for Flood Victims and Status of Recovery Efforts

FEMA stated that the local community be able to recover through “the capabilities of the state, affected local municipalities, and voluntary agencies.” MEMA Executive Director Lee Smithson and Harrison County Emergency Management Director Rupert Lacy are working with the City and County to write a Letter of Appeal. While I hope that the appeal process is successful, I know that folks in our community know how to step up and deal with challenges. So, I’m putting together a community meeting at 6 p.m., Thursday, June 9 at the Orange Grove Community Center in regards to government and non-profit assistance our community can provide to individuals trying to recover from flood damage. Also, I have corresponded with numerous citizens seeking assistance and others that want to know the status of the cleanup and clean out efforts of debris and drainage.

In order to make this meeting more beneficial for our community, I’ve requested the following to participate in this meeting:

  • Harrison County Supervisor Kent Jones
  • Harrison County Emergency Management Director Rupert Lacy
  • Harrison County Utility Authority
  • Gulfport Mayor Hewes and Council Members
  • Gulfport Public Works Department
  • Gulfport Engineering Department
  • Gulfport Urban Development Department
  • Gulfport Community Grants Group
  • South Mississippi Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (SMVOAD)
  • Waste Pro
